驭鲛记 / The Blue Whisper

There are so, so many titles to this drama. The English title is not bad, it just seems to have no connection to the story. The main title translates to “The tale of a merman.” 鲛 人 is merfolk, while 驭 is a literary word for control or command. The drama got split into 2 “seasons” and the first season is called 与君初相识 – When We First Met (or On First Meeting My Gentleman Love); the second season is called 恰似故人归 – Just Like an Old Friend Returning. The two lines form a couplet and reflect the story of each half well.

Short Summary

A fox spirit wants to be free of the chains of enslavement. She’s promised freedom if she can deliver the mer-prince’s obedience to the crazy Princess ruling them all. Instead of gaining her freedom she is forever trapped in her love for the mer-prince who swears to be true to none but her.

周生如故 One and Only

如故 has the meaning of as before or like old friends, so the title translates to Zhousheng As Before or Zhousheng From Old. One and Only, the English title is not in anyway connected to the Chinese title and is chosen to match Forever and Ever, which will be the second “volume” of this drama.

Summary

In a kingdom once upon a time, there was a young prince, Little Nan-Chen Wang, who became a great warrior. He fought for the kingdom and the people lived in peace and prosperity under his protection. He promised his life to the kingdom and the king, to never marry or have children. One day, a young maiden came under his tutelage, and she grew up under his care and slowly their feelings for each other became more than they could be for the maiden was already promised to the crown prince of the realm. Neither could break the constraints of this life. Then if in this life their love was not meant to be, maybe in the next life fate would be kinder.
